Cruising the Virgin Way: Bold, Grown-Up, and Anything but Ordinary
By now, you’ve probably caught a glimpse of Virgin Voyages—whether from a bold commercial or a buzzworthy post on social media. But if you haven’t, allow me to introduce you to this cruise line made just for adults. Yes, you read that right, no kids. Virgin Voyages is bold, unapologetic, and designed to break the mold of traditional cruising. And while that’s exactly what makes it so special, it is also what makes it not the right fit for every cruiser. If you are expecting classic cruise hallmarks like buffets, Broadway shows, or formal nights, you won’t find them here. You will not find traditional cruise elements like buffets, a cruise director , or classic Broadway-style shows. Instead, think drag brunches, curated menus, and pop up performances. If you're open-minded, love great food, enjoy unexpected entertainment, and appreciate a cruise that lets you be as relaxed or as wild as you want to be, Virgin Voyages might just be your perfect match.
Get to Know the App (Yes, You Will Use It A Lot And Sometimes It Won’t Cooperate) One thing to know upfront: the Virgin Voyages app is essential. You will use it throughout your trip to check your daily schedule, book activities, message Sailor Services, track your onboard spending, and even select your disembarkation time. Virgin recently launched a brand new version of the app for iPhones (Android will come out later), which makes pre-sailing tasks like checking in, reserving restaurants, and booking excursions much smoother. But here’s the honest truth: the app still has its quirks. It can be glitchy, and there are times when it simply doesn’t work at all. It can be frustrating, especially since the app is such a big part of your onboard experience. Even more confusing, you currently need two separate apps: the new version for pre-cruise planning, and the original Sailor App for key onboard features like ordering Ship Eats, or the iconic “Shake for Champagne”. It’s a bit of a clunky setup for now, but Virgin Voyages is actively working on consolidating everything in the future.
No Buffets Here—Just Good Eats When it comes to cruise food, expectations can vary; however, Virgin Voyages has stepped things up. With no buffets and no main dining rooms, every restaurant onboard is included and thoughtfully designed to deliver unique, elevated dining experiences. The variety is impressive, and several dishes genuinely wowed me. That said, like any dining experience, there may be a few hits and misses depending on your palate. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
The Wake– Hands down, one of my favorite restaurants. This steak-and-seafood spot is a standout for dinner. The clam chowder? Absolutely delicious and easily one of the best things I ate onboard. Also, this venue is open on port days to have breakfast or brunch so if you don’t want to get off the ship, this is a great place to grab a bite to eat.
Pink Agave – This upscale Mexican restaurant delivers on flavor and vibe. Don’t miss the spicy Mango Habanero Margarita (ask for it extra spicy!). For food, I recommend starting with the Esquites (a small plate) and finishing strong with the chocolate tacos for dessert. Some drinks and dishes can lean into the adventurous side (“It’s Like Crickets in Here” cocktail with actual crickets), so if you prefer more traditional Mexican fare, it might not hit every note.
Gunbae – A Korean BBQ experience that is as fun as it is delicious. They like to start things off with a fun Korean drinking game…think laughs, clapping, and quick counting. Plus, a free shot of soju to kick off the good vibes. You will grill right at the table, making it perfect for groups or a great icebreaker if you are sailing solo. Sign up for this only if you're feeling very social and energetic as this is not a place where you are seated for tables of 2. While Virgin Voyages doesn’t have a traditional buffet, The Galley acts as a modern food court with a variety of quick-service options—from bento boxes and fresh salads to tacos, burgers, and all-day breakfast. You will also find grab-and-go areas scattered throughout the ship, perfect for when you just want a snack between activities. The Social Club Diner has takeaway options like popcorn, pretzels, and even hot dogs and the Dock House will serve shareable small bites such as garlic hummus with flatbread or beef kofta.
Entertainment and Activities, Reinvented: Expect the Unexpected Virgin Voyages takes entertainment and activities onboard to a whole new level. Think edgy, immersive, and totally unexpected. You will not find cruise theater here; instead, you will stumble into experiences that feel more like underground performances or interactive pop-ups. From boy band dance classes like NSync's “Bye, Bye Bye” to festival stage music and supper club experiences, Virgin Voyages brings out your playful side while delivering grown-up indulgence. While Virgin’s entertainment and activities lineup is innovative and fun, it is also very niche. If you are looking for more polished productions, or you are not into alternative-style performances, it may not resonate the same way. But if you’re open to trying something new and offbeat, you might just find yourself loving what they have to offer. One of my absolute favorite activities is the VHS 80’s workout. It is a throwback dance class complete with neon leotards, high energy music, and all the retro vibes. Whether you’re breaking a sweat or just showing up for the “shake weight” fun, it is the kind of thing you will find yourself talking about long after the cruise ends. That said, popular activities like this can fill up fast. Many of the fitness classes and events arelimited in size, and spots can be tough to snag unless you're quick to book through the app (another reason to get familiar with it early!). Don’t forget to pack something red as Scarlet Night is the themed party of the cruise that you don’t want to miss. The entire ship transforms, especially the pool deck (weather permitting), which becomes a full-blown nightclub under the stars. With DJs, surprise performances, and dancers bringing nonstop energy, it is the kind of night that reminds you why Virgin Voyages does things differently. Also, on every cruise is a late night Pajama party. From classic pajama sets to hilarious onesies and even a few sexy little numbers, their pajama party turns bedtime fashion into the ultimate party statement. “Not into pajamas? No worries as there is zero judgment onboard. Just come as you are and enjoy the fun. And for those sailing on Scarlet Lady or Brilliant Lady, be sure to check out Duel Reality. It is a high-intensity, Romeo and Juliet inspired battle between the red and blue teams, packed with acrobatics and circus-style acts all performed just feet away from the audience.
Virgin Voyages isn’t your typical cruise. It is an elevated, adults-only escape where you can unwind in style or party like there’s no tomorrow. So pack your bags and get ready to rock the boat.
